SF Gate: Online Privacy Concerns Growing

There’s a privacy arms race under way online, an ongoing struggle among consumers, Internet companies, advocates and policymakers to assert greater control over personal data.

In the wake of the recent National Security Agency spying revelations, a number of people disabled the browser cookies that allow marketers to monitor online activity or took other steps to protect their privacy, according to a recent survey by Annalect.

Mozilla plans to eventually block certain cookies by default in an upcoming version of its Firefox browser. And policymakers are continually threatening to clamp down on various practices, either by nudging along efforts to define new industry standards or passing new laws.
